Donation and Refund Policy

Effective 23 August 2026

Our tax status

UCare Foundation, Inc. is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is classified as a private foundation under section 509(a). Our EIN is 92-2215322.

This limit is different from most charities

Because UCare is a private foundation rather than a public charity, the amount a US taxpayer may deduct is subject to lower limits — generally 30% of adjusted gross income for cash gifts, and 20% for gifts of appreciated property. Gifts of property other than qualified appreciated stock are generally deductible at your cost basis rather than market value.

These are general statements about US law, not advice. Please confirm the treatment of your gift with your own tax advisor.

Receipts

Every donation receives an emailed receipt. It states UCare's name and EIN, the amount, the date, and confirms whether any goods or services were provided in exchange. Keep it — for a gift of $250 or more the IRS requires a written acknowledgment before you can claim a deduction.

If you do not receive a receipt, or need a replacement, write to hope@giveucare.org.

Restricted and unrestricted gifts

You may give to a specific fund or project, or give unrestricted so we can put the money where it is most needed. A gift to a named project is used for that project.

If a project is completed, cannot proceed, or receives more than it needs, the Board may redirect the remaining funds to a purpose as close as practicable to the one you chose. This is standard practice and it is how we avoid money sitting unused. We will say so publicly when it happens.

On the donation form this appears in plainer words: "If this appeal is fully funded or closes, we will use your gift where it is needed most." The two say the same thing and both must appear — the short line at the moment of the gift, this clause in the policy behind it.

We cannot accept gifts earmarked for a named individual. A donation directed to a particular person is not deductible and we will decline it.

Refunds

Donations are gifts and are generally not refundable. We will refund in these cases:

A mistake — a duplicate charge, the wrong amount, or a donation made in error, if you tell us within 30 days.

An unauthorized charge — tell us immediately and we will refund it and work with Donorbox and Stripe to investigate.

Refunds go back to the original payment method, usually within 5–10 business days. If a receipt has already been issued we will issue a correction.

Recurring donations

You can change or cancel a recurring gift at any time using the link in your receipt, or by writing to us. Cancellation stops future payments; it does not refund payments already made.

Gifts other than money

We welcome in-kind donations of goods where they meet a real need. US tax law puts the responsibility for valuing a non-cash gift on the donor, not on the recipient — so our receipt will describe what we received but will not state a value.

Anonymous gifts

You may give anonymously. We will not publish your name. We still have to record the donation for our own tax filings.

Where the money goes

UCare funds local organizations who deliver the work. Our grantmaking is overseen by the Board of Directors, and every recipient is asked to confirm in writing how the funds were used.
